26 Mile Trip and Organizing

We have been using Kosmos in Ensenada. We have done some small day trips. We practice docking and maneuvering around buoys to get feel for the boat. Our longest trip so far was a 26 mile round trip past the Isla Todas Santos. We went out about 4 miles away from all land. We had a mission: dump our black water tank, aka septic tank where the toilets flush to. Legally boats need to be at least 3 miles away from land to do this.

In addition to exercising the main engine, we have run the wing engine, generator, and air conditioning systems. So far so good! Kosmos does get dirty quickly here in Ensenada. There are cruise ships that dock about ever other day. They run their engines and generator systems 24/7 which creates soot that settles on Kosmos.

We continue organizing things. The latest projects have been sorting out our first aid kit, stowing some spare parts, and storing safety gear. As mentioned before the boat is a big 3 dimensional puzzle.  A fun task was applying the documentation number. It has to be 3 inch tall numbers, somewhere inside the boat, and applied in way that would make it obvious if it is removed or changed. Stickers coated with fiberglass tape and resin did the trick. The opaque fiberglass tape magically becomes see-through as the resin is applied. The warnings on the resin were a mile long. Gloves are a must. The resin is like steel when it hardens. It comes in two packets. You mix them together and nothing can stop it from hardening. You have about 10-15 minutes before the liquid starts to gel and harden. It is interesting stuff, considering the entire hull of the boat is made from fiberglass and resin.

We still look at Kosmos in awe. This is our boat? Have we really gone down this path? We smile as we realize the answers are yes. We are as anxious as ever to spend time together and travel. Anyway, sorry there is nothing to exciting to report.

  1. Hi Eric and Chris,
thanks for the Mac-Navi information GPSNavX. I will test this in the next time.
When do you will start to the big trip in 2007? Have you a time schedule for the Europa trip? Perhaps I can meet you here.
In September I will take your regards to the UK staff, ok!?
Every day I am looking in the internet (KOSMOS Web) of news about your and your wifes actions and plans. Have a good time.
    Peter

  2. Hi Peter,

So far it is looking like April or May 2007 for our big departure. It is difficult to say for sure though. Assuming we take off in 2007 as planned we be in Europe around May/June 2008. We hope we can visit you at some point. 🙂 We want to roam around the Med for 6 months. There is lots to see there!

Say hi to Nordhavn staff, I have met at least 1 person from the UK office.

    Eric
