He changed the batteries in the refrigerator sensors. He unpacked the lazarette in order to access the wireless temperature sensor for the inverter blower and changed the batteries in it. Eric was relieved that the system remembered all the settings and he didn’t need to reprogram the settings.

We have two modes of operation: anchoring and marina. When we’re in a marina, some of the gear that we need for anchoring gets stowed in the dinghy. He unpacked the dinghy so that he could work on it. Then he tested the new dinghy motor battery that he’d bought at the boat show (it had arrived via UPS a couple of days ago) and confirmed it worked.

Next he tackled the handles. Our dinghy has 6 handles that were factory installed. As we’d already mentioned, two had broken. While we were in Norfolk, Eric had purchased special line specifically for the handle repair project. He installed the lines and the handles (the one he’d purchased and the hose). Much to his delight, the hose worked great as a handle — almost as good as the one we’d bought.

The black one is the purchased handle, the red one is the hose.

When he was done, he put all the stuff away that had come out of the dinghy and the lazarette, which was a significant task.

At one point, we all took a break from chores/school so we could go say our goodbyes to Blue Heeler, who were leaving today to start heading south. Since we were going to the Eastern Caribbean and they were going to The Bahamas, we likely wouldn’t see them again. The hardest part about boating is leaving the friends that have been made.

After we finished chores/school, we went to The Market for lunch. Now that the boat show was over, the tents and other obstructions were being removed, and we were starting to see what the City Dock area actually looked like.

This was the restaurant that Eric had lunch at on Sunday, which was right on the water at the City Dock.

This was across the street from The Market. We couldn’t see it at all during the show because of all the tents/booths blocking the view.

Here was a better shot of The Market. The one we’d posted the day we’d arrived in Annapolis had a lot of glare.

The street on the east side of the boat show that had been blockaded (the street with the ice cream shop) was now partially open.

In the afternoon, Eric did another D & D session with the kids from Tiki Tour and Atlas.

This morning, Eric changed the fuel filters on the generator and the main engine. One trick that Eric had learned years ago, and usually did when changing fuel filters, was to fill the new filter with Stanadyne to help clean out the injectors.

He changed the transmission oil on the main engine and checked the magnet on the main engine transmission. The magnet is supposed to pull any metal filings out of the transmission. He was pleased to see that there was nothing on the magnet.

Then he put all the tools away. As Eric frequently says, getting the parts/tools out and putting them away took longer than the projects themselves did.

The last chore he did was to strap down the anchor. The anchor tends to wobble in big seas. Eric had made a special board to hold it in place, which took away most of the wobble and was sufficient for most sea conditions. But since we were getting ready to do a major passage in potentially big seas, he wanted to make sure that the anchor didn’t wobble at all.

For lunch, we wandered around in search for something that looked good. This was the end of Compromise street, near the intersection with Main Street.

On Main Street, we saw a French restaurant that looked good, so we had lunch there.

We were pleased to report that the waitress was French and, after he ordered in French, she asked Keith if he was an exchange student! The food was really good.

We’ve been wanting to take a tour of the famous Annapolis Naval Academy, but we were told that the tours were canceled due to the government shutdown. But this morning someone said that the tours were still happening. We decided to stop by to get clarification on whether we could schedule a tour.

We arrived at the security gate at 1455. The security guard said the last tour of the day was just beginning, so we rushed into the Visitor’s Center to get tickets. To be continued…

Thursday, October 16 — Dawn this morning.
