Argh. We were frustrated with ourselves for not moving yesterday. When Eric and Keith went to bring in the flopper stopper, they saw this guy was making circles around it.

We immediately moved to the anchorage called Between the Majors on the northwest side of Big Major Cay. It was much more comfortable than the south side had been, but still rolly enough to deploy the port side flopper stopper. One of the issues with this anchorage that had made Eric reluctant to move yesterday was that it had a strong current that caused the boats to swing wildly from one direction to the other, increasing the chance of dragging. And the boats didn’t move together in unison. Some boats moved more with the wind direction and others with the current, so there was a bigger chance of collisions in this type of anchorage. We made sure that we anchored far away from the other boats and that the anchor was set well. This was our view of the anchorage looking northeast towards Fowl Cay.

And looking southwest towards Staniel Cay.

Much to Eric’s horror, the AC watermaker stopped working not long after we’d anchored. The sensor indicated that the water salinity was too high, so it was pumping the water it made back overboard. Eric manually tested the water. The hand sensor said the water was at 300 ppm, but the water maker unit was registering it as 600 ppm. Eric believed the machine’s sensor was reading incorrectly. We’d had the sensor cleaned when we were in Florida. Immediately after cleaning, all had been fine, but Eric had noticed that the sensor ppm readings have been slowly creeping up ever since. Fortunately, we had two water makers onboard, so this failure wasn’t a crises.

The other horrifying discovery me made was that we had noseeums onboard. We all had lots of bites from them. We can’t remember if we’ve already mentioned this or not, but we have electric devices onboard that have a light that attracts bugs. When the bugs land on it, the device barbecues the bugs. It works great and it usually gets rid of pests quickly.

After all the rocking yesterday, Christi was anxious to get to shore today. We waited until 1530 to leave so we could go in during slack tide. Since we were coming from a different direction than we normally did, here was a view of Staniel Cay’s shore that we haven’t posted before.

In good news, the sea wall was not underwater We saw one of the rocks had fallen over.

On the way in, we saw that there was someone cutting up fish and throwing the carcasses to the sharks.

We had an early dinner at yacht club.

We ate quickly and rushed back to Kosmos, wanting to return before it got dark and before the current got too strong. Here was sunset.

Noseeums onboard.
