In the morning, Eric and Keith played D & D with Blue Heeler. In the late afternoon, Eric and Keith played D & D with Tiki and Zimovia. In between the D & D sessions, all four sets of kids went to the beach together. There was no adult supervision onshore, but Leanne, the mom on Blue Heeler, spied on them with binoculars from her boat.

After playing onshore for a while, the group went back to Kosmos to play on the platform. Here was Fynn from Tiki ferrying the rest of other children from the beach to Kosmos.

The kids pushing each other off the platform.

After his time in the water, Keith commented that this was the weirdest water he’d ever seen. It was the bluest water he’d ever seen, and based on the stunning color, he expected it to be clear like it was in the rest of The Bahamas — but it was totally opaque. He’d been surprised that there was no visibility at all underwater. Keith said he thinks there may be more silt than water in the cove.

Kosmos was getting low on fresh water, so Eric was anxious to move to an anchorage suitable for making water. On Monday morning, they pulled up anchor and did a passage to Hog Cay on Long Island, which was next to Calabash (on the south side). Tiki Tour and Zimovia went, too, but Blue Heeler didn’t join us. There were two narrow, shallow channels along the way. Likewise, while the entrance to the anchorage looked wide, the part deep enough for Kosmos was narrow and the portion deep enough for Kosmos to anchor in wasn’t that big.

Navigating tight the channels stressed Eric out. He was relieved when they safely pulled into the anchorage, dropped anchor, and settled in a good place not too close to the shallow edges. However, he was disappointed that the anchorage was rolly. He put out the port-side flopper stopper right away, and a few hours later, put out the starboard flopper stopper. With both flopper stoppers out, the anchorage was tolerable.

The draw of this anchorage was a rare species called The West Indian Whistling Duck that lived there. Hog Cay was privately owned, and what we read online was that the owner fed the ducks, so there was a large resident population of 380 birds. We’d heard from other cruisers that the owner has since died and he left the property in a trust specifically to care for the birds, but we haven’t verified if that is true. The ducks were nocturnal and the best time to see them was supposed to be at sunset, when they came out to feed.

Tiki Tour decided to take a dinghy ride to a spot where the ducks supposedly congregated to see if they could get a look at them. Keith joined them. It was up a narrow, shallow inlet in the same estuary that we’d explored when we went to Calabash last year. It was so shallow that they had to tilt the motor up and manually push dinghy because the motor was too deep to have it down. Keith reported that they saw a few ducks, but the ducks didn’t whistle for them.

After returning back to the anchorage, the kids from Tiki and Zimovia came over to Kosmos to play on the platform again.

Afterwards, they all went to Zimovia to hang out. At sunset, the parents on Tiki tried again to see the ducks. Eric joined them in their dinghy. Here was the sun setting.

There was a spot near the anchorage where the ducks were supposed to congregate, and they hovered close to the spot.

However, they didn’t see any ducks. Here was a shot looking at the anchorage from where they were hovering.

Sunday, February 8 was a fun day.
