It was still very windy. Now that we were no longer protected, the anchorage was filled with small, bouncy waves. It was uncomfortable. As soon as we woke up, we got Kosmos ready to go – brought the paravanes in, raised the dinghy up, took the snubber and window covers off, tided up — and pulled up anchor at 0830.

Everyone else was leaving, too. We joined the conga line of boats. On the radio, we heard the Bahamian coast guard call a particular boat that was already en route to notify him they were going to board him. In the distance, we could see the coast guard boat approaching another boat.

We dropped anchor in Hog Cay at 1015. The anchorage was calm since the wind waves couldn’t get in from that direction, but there was still a strong, cold wind. Christi did not bundle up before going out on deck to drop the anchor, and she froze for the few minutes she was outside.

In the early afternoon, Eric and Keith went to the beach with several of the families. Christi stayed behind to make lunch. When it was done, Eric and Keith came onboard to eat, then all three of us went back to the beach until sunset. The kids played on the floating donut trampoline and the adults sat under the hut and talked. The single-hander who’d been boarded was there, too. He said that the coast guard staff were very polite and just wanted to see his cruising permit.

The sunset was also blocked by clouds, but again there was a neat lighting effect.

At 1930, all three of us went over to Traveler for games, along with some of the other families. The kids played one game while the adults played another. We all had a great time.

On Thursday, it was still very cloudy and windy, though not quite as cold as yesterday. We pulled up anchor at 0800. When Eric and Keith had brought in the snubber, it rained on them, but when Christi went out to raise the anchor only two minutes later, the shower had already passed. There was a beautiful rainbow, and one of the cruisers took this incredible photo of us as Christi was raising the anchor. Now we know why there were leprechauns on the boat this morning! They must have stolen the pot of gold!

The wind was at about 17-knots. The seas were uncomfortable in the unprotected areas, with 5 foot swells at 5 seconds plus 2-foot windchop waves hitting us on the starboard forward corner (so it was head seas). We had sea spray come over the bow quite a few times. Here was a little video of the ride.

We passed by several islands, and when we were in the lee of those islands, it wasn’t nearly as bad, though still not what we’d call comfortable at 3- 4 foot swells and 1- 2 foot wind chop at 3 – 4 second intervals. Fortunately, we spent more time in the protected waters than the unprotected waters. We ran at 1650 RPM and averaged about 6.1 knots. Christi was nauseated for most of the ride.

We arrived at Flamingo Cay at 1500. It was so rolly that it felt like we were still at sea. Eric put out the port flopper stopper, and while it helped, it was still uncomfortable. We were all very lethargic. Christi made plain rice for dinner because she felt like she couldn’t manage to cook or digest anything more complicated. It was another one of those evenings where the sun was eaten by a cloud as it neared the horizon.

We did not get the dinghy down and all went to bed early. This was the dawn on Friday

Eric didn’t sleep well from all the motion. At one point, he got up to see if the flopper stopper had fallen off. It was still very cloudy and windy at 15-knots, but it was warmer this morning than it had been the last few mornings.

We started getting ready to go as soon as we got up. Since it was so rolly, all three of us needed to help bring the flopper stopper in. We can’t remember if we’ve mentioned this before… when we’re in a rolly anchorage, the flopper stoppers can swing wildly as we raise them up out of the water. Whenever we are someplace rolly, Christi holds a fender against the side of the boat to prevent the flopper stopper from smashing into the boat and damaging the gelcoat. It had not rained and the boat was still salty from all the sea spray.

We pulled up anchor at 0710. The swivel got stuck again and we had a hard time getting the anchor situated properly in its holder. Initially, the ride was a bit uncomfortable – not bad, just a bit lumpy. By noon, the wind had calmed down to 8-knots and the seas had smoothed out. It was quite pleasant for the rest of the passage with 2- 3 foot swells and 1- 2 foot wind chop at long intervals. Overhead, the sun was shining, though there were ominous clouds on the horizon. All the charts lined up nicely with the suggested route that we followed.

We ran at 1700 RPM and averaged about 6.5 knots. We arrived at Rocky Point at 1445 and dropped anchor next to a Nordhavn 50. Here were a couple shots of the anchorage.

And a map so you can see where we’d anchored.

The anchorage was nice and calm. Christi immediately got to work making dinner while Eric called the Nordy on the radio to say hi and chat for a bit. Neither of us got our dinghies down, so we didn’t meet in person.

We were sad to see that the water was cloudy. While it wasn’t as silty as Thompson Bay had been, Eric determined it had too much silt to make freshwater. Eric regretted not making water for longer with DC water maker while we were at sea today.

As you saw in the photos, by the time we’d anchored, the clouds had moved in.By 1630, the wind had completely died. With no wind, it was a little on the warm side, but not hot enough to need AC. This was the dusk.

After dark, It was eerily calm out. The only real light was from the nearly full moon, which lightly illuminated the water. The gentle light, clouds and silty water came together to create a surreal effect — it almost felt like we were in a fog bank even though there was no fog.

Eric did turn on the generator and AC for a short time before we went to bed to ensure that we could comfortably fall asleep.

On Wednesday, February 25th, the sunrise was blocked by clouds, but it made a neat lighting effect.
