We did our morning routine of school and chores, but Christi and Keith had to stop school work early because they were both getting nauseated from trying to read with all the motion (as an FYI, we generally did not do school work when Kosmos was in transit because of the propensity to get seasick).

We decided that we needed to escape the rocking and spend the day onshore. Other than the public park, there was nothing open to the public that was within walking distance. Since we were low on “passage foods,” we wanted to go to the grocery store. We also wanted to eat out for lunch. Eric looked up prices and found that it would cost $35 – $40 each way to take a taxi to the closest grocery store. We knew it would cost the same or less to rent a car for the day. The first two rental agencies that we called had no cars available, but the third place did. They said it would cost $60 for the car for the day, plus a $30 fee to pick us up and drop us back off. We agreed to the terms. We arranged to be picked up at noon at the public beach.

At the beach, there were pylons that looked like they were the remains of what was once a dock. A couple of dinghies were tied to the pylons, but we decided that, with the tide swing while we were gone, it would be safer to beach the dinghy. This was looking northwest from the beach.

And a shot looking southwest.

We locked up the motor, set the anchor and went to the parking lot to wait.

The parking lot had a large dumpster where it was free to dump trash. We were early, so we killed time by reading the signs about the park. Clifton Heritage National Park encompassed 156 acres of wooded area and beaches. It contained historic ruins from the Colonial Era. The map indicated that at the southern western end was the Great House and not far from it was a slave settlement.

Archeologists have also found remains onsite, including pottery and tools made from shells, from the indigenous people. The Lucayanas had migrated from South American in dugout canoes 1500 year ago and settled the islands. Tragically, they were wiped out by the Spaniards during the Colonial Era.

The driver from the rental agency picked us up in a minivan. It was a surprisingly long drive to the agency’s office in Nassau. From what we saw, it looked like our anchorage was in a very high-end part of town. We passed one street that looked like it had older, lower-end homes on it, but most everything else we passed looked brand new and upscale.

And there were a lot of construction projects going on. While we’ve seen a lot of abandoned construction projects all over The Bahamas, most of the projects that we passed by in the west end of the island looked like they were in active construction.

Once we arrived, they said the fee was actually $45 for drop off and pick up. But since it was a long drive, we didn’t complain. We hopped online and found a very highly rated restaurant not far from the agency, called Social House. When we arrived, it looked pretty high end, and we suspected that, like Xuma’s on Highbourne Cay, we were going to spend an outrageous amount of money.

Much to our surprise, the prices were lower than most of the restaurants we’ve been to in The Bahamas. The menu was a fusion of Asian and South American, and the food options sounded interesting and intriguing. When our food arrived, we were pleasantly surprised that the portions were not skimpy and the food was delicious. We got the Cancha Corn appetizer, which was described as seasoned toasted corn kernels. They were puffy and crunchy and spicy and yummy. We’d say they tasted similar to the snack food Corn Nuts, but with a softer texture.

Keith ordered Peruvian Chicken, which was served with corn and potatoes. Keith said it was the best chicken he’s ever had, and that the potatoes were in the top 5 of best potatoes of all time.

Christi ordered the Black Cod, which tasted just like Roy’s Butterfish. Since Roy’s butterfish was one of her all time favorite foods, she was delighted. Eric ordered a Bento Box, which was a lunch special that was only $19.00. He’d expected it to be small, so he’d also ordered some sushi.

Of every restaurant that we’ve been to in the entire Bahamas, we rate Social House as the best value for the money in terms of price, portions and food quality. And we have eaten at some restaurants that had good food/portions, but Social House was the best overall. After so many expensive, mediocre and small meals in the Exumas, it was wonderful to experience really good food.

After we finished lunch, we headed to the grocery store. We decided to go to the closet one to the anchorage so that we could buy frozen foods without worrying that they’d melt in transit. It was called Naturally Fresh and it was owned by Solomon’s. We’d thought Solomon’s was a fairly high-end store, but this store had an even bigger selection of high end stuff — and the prices were notably higher than the regular Solomon’s. Most of the high end items averaged about double of what we’d paid for the same items in Florida, such as Aldeen’s ice cream and Greek Gods yogurt. But they were available here and not at the other Solomon’s.

We went back to boat and dropped off Keith and the groceries. Here were Eric and Keith as we were preparing to launch the dinghy.

Then Eric and Christi went back to shore to return the car. There was a lot more of traffic on the way back, particularly once we got into Nassau proper. Just getting up the street that the agency was on was excruciatingly slow. We could have walked much faster! On a side note, we’ve noticed that most of the roundabouts on New Providence have statues of something iconic to The Bahamas in the middle. Some of the statues were really cute. The statutes definitely added sone character to the island.

The drop off time was 1630, and we were 10-minutes late. The staff nodded empathetically when we complained that we’d seriously underestimated the amount of traffic we’d hit. On shuttle ride back to the boat, there was another person in the van with us. He was dropped off at the airport, which was relatively close to the anchorage. It was a nice little detour. The airport looked new and nice.

Back at the beach, Christi lost her footing and fell into the water while launching the dinghy. Keith laughed when he saw that she was all wet. Once back onboard, we stowed the dinghy, took the window covers off and got Kosmos ready to go to sea. Not long after, Tiki Tour sailed by us, but didn’t stop as they were en route to Florida.

In the evening, Christi went to work on a blog post and found our website was down. Eric checked and found that we were out of storage, which was super weird since we didn’t think we were anywhere close to our limit. Eric bought more storage and hoped that the website would come back online by itself. If it wasn’t online in the morning, we’d have to contact the hosting company to help with getting it working again. Here was the sunset.

And the twilight.

Sunrise on Thursday, March 26 This morning, the anchorage was rolly and uncomfortable.
