Tuesday, May 12, 2026 — On Sunday, Eric spent the morning getting the boat ready to be left for 3-weeks. He added more lines, so we had eight lines in total and should be good to go if a freak windstorm blows in. He switched the power to inverter bypass. He also took out the dinghy motor and tested it \u2013 it still wasn’t working<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We normally don’t do school on Sundays, but since we weren’t going to be doing school on the trip, Christi and Keith did a lot of school work. Christi also did laundry and made creative meals with the remaining ingredients onboard that wouldn’t last the 3-weeks we’d be gone. We all packed for the trip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boys didn\u2019t remember it was Mother\u2019s Day until late morning. Since there hadn’t been enough food left to fully satisfy everyone for dinner, we went to The Loop <\/a>to supplement the meal. This was the sunset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, in addition to another mega school day, we puttered around the boat getting things organized for our trip. One of the things we did was flush out the sink<\/a>. Several little jellyfish went to the through hull where the sink was draining into the river. We assumed they were gobbling up the morsels.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had a belated Mother’s Day celebration at Longhorn Steakhouse, located in the Ortega shopping center<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We found it to be very comparable to Outback Steakhouse in price, menu and quality, and since we really like Outback, that was a good thing. The biggest difference was that the theme was American Southwest cowboy versus Australian. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, we woke up early and got ready to go. We left the boat at 0900 and got to the Jacksonville airport at about 0920. We dropped off the car at rental center, which was in the parking garage adjacent to the terminal. It was a short walk to terminal, a short TSA line, and a short walk to the gate. We were sitting at the gate by 1000. The airport was clean and nice. This was one of the easiest airport experiences we’ve had. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Southwest flight was on time and not full, but it was turbulent. We arrived at Baltimore<\/a> at 1330. This was taken as we came in for the landing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We retrieved our bags from the baggage claim in the A concourse (since the next leg was on Icelandic Air, Jacksonville couldn’t check our bags all the way through), then walked to the E concourse. We consulted a map and saw we were going from one end of the airport to another. It was a very long walk — we couldn’t believe how big this airport was! The Icelandic Air desk didn\u2019t open until 1700. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was a Martin M-130 “China Clipper” suspended from the ceiling in the foyer. Per the sign, it was inaugurated in 1936 and was the first transoceanic passenger airplane<\/a> with service from San Francisco to Manila. It had a 130-foot wingspan, a fuselage in excess of 90-feet, four 830-hp engines, carried 4,000 gallons of fuel and had a range of 2,500 – 3,200 miles, depending on load, fuel and weather. It was built here in Maryland, hence being featured at this airport. In small print, it said the exhibit had been created by the Baltimore Museum of Industry.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were the only people in the whole terminal, so we set up shop at a large table and worked on our devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This concourse only had a vending machine for food. When we got hungry, we had to venture to Concourse D for a restaurant. There were also some benches, and at one point, Christi laid down to rest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 1700, went checked in and went through security. The terminal was empty when we walked in. While people did steadily stream in, there were still not all that many people inside when our flight boarded. That meant there were lots of seats with plugs available, allowing us to spread out and use our devices. There were also a few soft benches in the terminal, as well, which Christi made use of. Her back was not happy at spending the day in uncomfortable chairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our flight boarded late. They utilized a biometric ID system to board plane, which was a little creepy. They boarded back to front. Since we were in the back, we were one of the first on the plane. The flight left late. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We had expected meals and beverages to be included and drinks since it was an international flight, but they charged for everything except water, tea and coffee. The seating was uncomfortable, with narrow seats set very close together — no elbow or leg room. Eric and Keith both dozed off, but only slept a few minutes at a time before waking up again. Christi didn\u2019t sleep at all — she found the seating to be too uncomfortable to fall asleep. The flight was very turbulent \u2013 much more turbulent than the Southwest flight had been. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
