When it was time to leave the Geothermal Park, we boarded the bus and set off. Here was a shot of one of the many rivers we passed over along the way. The photo also gives a good sense of the scenery.

On the way, we also passed an Icelandic horse farm. The driver slowed down so we could take photos. The guide said the breed specific to Iceland. They were notably smaller than other breeds of horses and had a unique gait that other breeds of horses didn’t have.

The next stop was the Gullfoss Waterfall. As we drove, the guide explained that the first environmental activist in Iceland was a woman who was trying to protect this waterfall from being turned into a geothermal dam. The bus parked in the visitor’s center, along with several busses ghat we recognized from our other stops. We exited the bus and followed a path down to the water. Here was a shot looking back at the visitor’s center.

And a shot of the horizon taken from the walkway.

The viewing area was on two levels. We could stay on the top of the cliff, or take a set of stairs down to a ledge where we could get a closer look. We took the stairs.

This was the view from quite a long ways back.

And a shot from up close.

And a short video from the viewing platform that can be seen on the left two photos above. The rock jetted out into the river a little bit, making the view stunning — it was hard for the little camera screen to capture the majesty of this enormous and powerful waterfall.

Here was a shot walking back from the edge of the fall towards the staircase.

The view from the upper viewing areas was even more stunning. This waterfall was truly amazing.

We were running out of time, so we didn’t make it all the way to the head of the waterfall on the upper viewing area. But that turned out to be a blessing in disguise because it began to rain as we neared the bus. We would have been very wet if we were at the viewing station when the rain started.

It rained the entire time we were en route to the next stop, and the rain halted just as we arrived. We were actually surprised that the next stop was the horse farm that we’d passed earlier. The driver let us off the bus for a few minutes to pet three horses that were in a special pen separate from the rest of the herd. We included a photo that has people in the background so you could see that the horses were about the same height as an average sized woman. They were very nice and patient with all the tourists pawing at them.

The next stop was the Friðheimar tomato farm. On the drive over, the guide explained that in Iceland, much of the produce was grown in greenhouses. The bus dropped us off in front of the greenhouse.

To be continued…

Friday, May 15 continued… When it was time to leave the Geothermal Park, we boarded the bus and set off.
