Note that the road was made of stone. La Paz was first discovered by the Spaniards in 1535. When the Spaniards began colonizing Baja, they wanted to make La Paz their first settlement. A combination of hostile natives, disease, and strong storms caused their colony to fail. The Spaniards colonized Loreto, instead. Pirates preying on Spanish galleons also became problematic around La Paz. The Spaniards tried for over 100 years colonize La Paz before they finally succeeded in 1811. In 1830 they moved the capitol of Baja from Loreto to La Paz.

Construction on this theater began in 1906 and it was completed in 1910.
