During the wee hours of the morning, the wind calmed down, the lightning vanished, and the sea conditions began to slowly improve. By morning, the ride was calm and pleasant. The swells were probably about three feet with long intervals, coming from two directions, and almost no wind chop. It was totally overcast with ominous grey clouds.

In the morning, another pod of dolphins came to play at the bow. This group stayed for quite a while and did a performance for us, frequently jumping out of the water. We saw them do three spins, and we caught the third one on video!

Eric also saw a turtle in the morning. We forgot to mention that Eric had also seen a turtle a few days ago, too.

In previous posts, we’ve talked about how the anchor tends to bounce and clang in head seas. One of the things that Eric replaced during the retrofit in San Diego was the anchor. We now have a Mantus M2 — and it also has the potential to move around without something to lock it in place. Eric spent a lot of time and energy building a locking system to hold the anchor in place.

It held well, but it needed a bit of an adjustment to make sure the straps held secure. However, there was another issues. Eric had a fail safe line attached to the chain, and it was a bit too tight. This took off the necessary tension to keep the metal chain lock tight, so during the bigger seas the metal chain lock came undone. Since the fail safe and the windlass were there, we had two other ways the chain was secure. Yet the chain lock is the preferred way to hold the anchor chain. He reduced the fail safe tension, and re-locked the anchor chain.

In the late afternoon, we heard a weird chittering sound. We went out to investigate and saw a couple of birds sitting on our rigging. The bird chittering was flying behind the two of them, apparently yelling at them to move. The other birds did not move. The bird landed on a different part of the rigging and quieted down.

We shooed the birds away, but they kept coming back. We’re dreading to see what the top deck looks like.

The sunset was obscured by the heavy clouds

Our Christmas present to ourselves was that we turned on AC for most of the day, even though today wasn’t nearly as hot as the previous few days had been. AC is magic. When it is hot, we don’t have much of an appetite and are extremely lethargic. Doing anything more strenuous to listening to an audiobook is a struggle. As soon as it cooled off inside, we were suddenly full of energy – cooking food, taking care of chores, etc.

This has been a surreal Christmas for us. It’s like Christmas never happened this year. We left San Diego just as all the decorations were being put up and the festivities were starting. Even in Mexico, it seemed most of the places we visited were only beginning to decorate for the holidays, and we never saw any place fully decorated.

We’re thankful for Starlink. We got a lot of texts wishing us a happy holiday. Being able to communicate with our loved ones today made it easier to be away. We probably would have been feeling lonely, isolated and depressed without the ability to communicate.

Also, the calm seas helped, too. If it had been rough, it would have been easy to have a pity-party about being at sea instead of at home with our loved ones.

Wednesday, December 25 — The worsening of sea conditions that happened late on Tuesday night didn’t last long.
