Final Construction Update – Factory Visit Treat
Sunday, May 7th 2006 in Dana Point – One day left before we take official delivery. We went to see how everything turned out after a final flurry of work by Nordhavn. We called and found out something neat.
The Taiwanese boat yard that built Kosmos had 3 of the workers visiting, and they were planning to be on the boat about the same time we were. So we quickly diverted to the store and got some chocolate and cookies and proceed to Kosmos to meet them.
It turns out the master woodworker was one of the people visiting. To our amazement he was there on our boat touching up the interior woodwork.
The wood was practically flawless before and now it is simply amazing. For most of our visits all the woodwork was covered with cardboard, so it was very impressive to see it uncovered and looking so great.
We met Josh, Mr. Li, and Mr. Li and gave them the food we brought.
We also asked them to relay a message back to the boat yard: We are forever thankful for the excellent work making our new home, and how confident we are of their master craftsmanship. Only Josh spoke English, but we think our smiles conveyed our message nicely to Mr. Li and Mr. Li.
We know some owners visit the boat yard in Taiwan, and we wish we could have as well. However it was a nice moment to meet some of the people that worked on our boat, have them meet us, and stand inside the completed vessel.
So this is it, the last construction update! Everything after this will become “ongoing projects” as opposed to construction.

[…] Friday May 12th in Dana Point - There were a lot of people involved making a boat as sophisticated as Kosmos. Dozens and dozens of factory workers that we did not get to meet (well except for three of them — see final construction update post). In addition to all the people at the factory, there are dozens of people in Dana Point. This includes Nordhavn (aka Pacific Asian Enterprises) staff, as well as several of the contractors that helped out. To thank them all we threw a dock party with plenty of food and drinks. Unfortunately, Christi forgot to put out non-alcoholic beverages, but no one complained. […]

[…] The second visit to Dana Point was to have some specific work done to the windows. Our friends from Taiwan were in town to do the work themselves (see May 20, 2006 post). It was nice to see them again. So, here comes the next funny story… when Eric and our friend, Derek, were preparing to pull out of the slip and head back to San Diego, the factory workers came up to the boat and were waving frantically. Eric and Derek thought our Taiwanese friends were just giving them an enthusiastic send off and waved back. But in reality, our Taiwanese friends were trying to stop Kosmos from leaving because there was one more thing that needed to be done! Fortunately, Eric and Derek realized something was up and stopped pulling out. Good thing, or else we would have taken Kosmos to Dana Point three times last month! […]
