Apataki Pictures

Approaching the pass (break in the land deep enough for a boat to get through to the lagoon) into Apataki. Manihi and Fakarava both look much the same from the distance as you approach them, low strips of land with a lot of vegetation.

Kosmos anchored in the distance. Look at how calm it is.

Afternoon sky as the rain by-passed us.

Eric standing on a sandbar separating the main lagoon from a mini-lagoon in the low areas between the strips of land. Looking at the pictures, we suspect that the stagnant pools are sinking land with water coming up from underneath, and as the ground around the pools erodes, the pools will eventually become mini-lagoons with good water flow.

The moonscape at the end of the mini-lagoon. We now think that it is lava rock. This rock goes a deceptively long way before getting to the ocean.

This is taken from the end of the mini-lagoon. You can see how far the mini-lagoon goes before getting to the sandbars. The sandbars are where the main lagoon is.

A fish in the mini-lagoon. Does anyone know what this is? We see them all the time diving and snorkeling. They get to be quite large.

A motu (mini-island off the main land of the island).

Sunset on the very calm day. Can you say reflections? These were taken a few minutes apart.

  1. Again, great pictures of the sunset.

Is it warm there? I ask because Eric appears to be wearing long sleeved shirts in a lot of the pictures. It seems like that would be really hot!! (all from my imagination of course)

  2. great pictures thanks

difficult to see from above but from shape and pectoral fins i think its probably a marabled grouper, ephinephelus polyphekadion.
please can you get an underwater camera it will make it easier!!!
