Sunrise, Tuesday August 30
As the sun was rising, a fleet of little fishing pangas came roaring into the bay and stopped suddenly near our boat. They fished for maybe an hour, then roared back out as fast as they came in. We heard several conversations between Americans, so we are guessing that tourists hire the pangas to take them fishing.
Eric had spent Monday evening trying to figure out how to fix the AC water maker. He realized that there was a way to re-set the computer on the AC water maker to keep it running despite the sensor indicating that the water was too salty. On Tuesday morning, he got up early, emptied out the lazarette so he could get to the water maker, took the water maker apart, turned the setting dial behind the control panel, tested it, and then put the water maker back together. He is pleased to report that it worked, and the AC water maker is again operational!
In the afternoon, we went snorkeling in The Bathtub. It was high tide and we’re guessing the water was about ten feet deep.
The bottom was mostly sand, so there wasn’t much to see beyond clams and rays, but we did swim over quite a few rays sitting in the sand and got a great look at them. One looked pregnant.
As we were riding back from the bathtub, we noticed tons of turtles were swimming in the main part of Don Juan. Every minute or so, we’d see a turtle head quickly pop out of the water, then duck back down.
We’ve forgotten to mention that we’ve caught quick glimpses of turtles in several places so far, including Bahia Falsa and Isla Carmen. However, we’ve never seen large numbers of turtles before.
In the evening, one of our neighbors, Ruby, came over to visit. We all sat outside and enjoyed the sunset.
With only a crescent moon, the stars were vibrant after dark. As Eric was getting Kosmos situated for the night, he heard coyotes singing in the night.
Wednesday was a windy day, which meant good ventilation. Ventilation helps so much with the oppressive heat. The anchorage calm despite wind.
In the morning, Eric changed generator oil, Christi cleaned the bottom, and Ruby took Keith snorkeling. In the early evening, we went back to The Bathtub. Eric and Keith snorkeled. Christi had already done a lot of swimming and was tired, so she sat on the strip of land between the bays and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. She watched six dolphins playing in the main part of Don Juan and watched the birds flying around.
Here is a sunset photo. After dark, the coyotes were singing again.
I remember laying in bed in San Felipe at night listening to the coyotes “yapping” and singing. It is beautiful but also spooky…I think when they all yap it means they have kill? I would love to see the turtles! For some reason the video wont show up me. I will have to check tomorrow at work.
I just spent 2 hours reading thru all the Mexico blog posts. Keep them coming! Nathaniel said to tell Keith “hi”
