More Exploring Staniel Cay, Exuma Islands, Bahamas

Just before the sun poked over the horizon on Thursday, May 1, 2025

Today was the 16 year anniversary of when Eric and Christi completed our circumnavigation (it took two years and two days). We were pleased to be celebrating this anniversary while actively cruising once again.

While we’ve cleaned the waterline a couple of times in the Bahamas, we haven’t cleaned the bottom since Panama. Eric decided his project for the day was to clean the bottom. It was the worst he’d ever seen it. Normally, it takes one tank of air to do the bottom. He went through two tanks of air before he was simply too tired to keep going, and he still had a long way to go.

After he was done, we went to town. We had lunch at the yacht club again. As we were leaving, we noticed a crowd around the corner of the dock where we’d seen all the sharks the other day. We couldn’t believe how many sharks there were.

People were petting the sharks!

It didn’t take long to figure out why the sharks were there. Someone was cleaning fish at a small table along the edge of the water and throwing the carcasses into the water.

After that gruesome feeding, we moved on to our primary purpose for coming to shore: we were low on eggs and we needed to go to the grocery store for more. The two stores we went to were literally next door to one another, and were a short walk from The Shipyard restaurant. Both were small buildings next to someone’s home.

building to the right was the grocery store

Neither had eggs in stock as the supply boat hadn’t come this week. The supply boat wouldn’t come again until next week. Suddenly, it made sense why they were limiting eggs in Nassau. But one of the stores did have bread that had been baked fresh by someone on the island that morning. We decided there was probably no point in walking to the third market since they were reliant on the same supply ship as these two stores. At least it had been a beautiful walk.

As a side note, we noticed that they’ve made major progress on the construction of the new building and one of the buildings that was adding a second floor.

We went back to Kosmos and had a quiet night aboard. This was the twilight shortly after sunset.

It rained shortly after this photo was taken. If you look to the bottom left, you can see the pillars of rain that were coming towards us. Eric and Keith played online Civilization VI with the Ocean Posse group in the evening. They didn’t go to bed until 1030, which was a very late night for us.
