Boat Construction Update 6 – White Mesh & “Laz”

Each time we visit Kosmos, something else is done. Sometimes it is an obvious change, such as the white mesh covers up on the windows:

Other times you have to look in places such as the lazarette. Err, the where? We were going to link to Dictionary.com for the definition for the less nautically savvy, but it gave us this definition: “Lazarette n. hospital for persons with infectious diseases (especially leprosy).” Ummmm… We are pretty sure we did not order one of those. So instead please use this definition from the marine glossary at MarineWaypoints.com which lists, “Lazarette – Compartment in the stern of a vessel used for storage; a storage space below the deck in the cockpit.” Ok, much better, yes we have one of those.

You could say the “laz” on the boat is like the garage or basement on a house. On Kosmos besides having storage space, it has several important mechanical and electrical items. For example it is where the hydraulic steering system connects to the rudder, and you can tell they are working on it because it is disconnected at the moment:

And here are a some more pictures inside the laz. See the picture with the box and hoses? See the valve on the left that has no hose? Bonus points if you can guess what that is for.

And other things were done since our last vist a week prior. Such as the screens were installed on the portholes, and the galley stove/oven was setup. The generator was run for about 5 hours and our guess is the air conditioning and heat systems were tested. An outside scrape was fixed and various inside panels were off for access to systems. Finally we saw a pile of rigging for our mast, paravanes, and boom.

We are starting to wonder when the anti-matter warp core and transporter pad (seen below) will be installed. We swear those are on our order.

  1. It looks great! I confess – I had heard the term lazarette, but only in connection with the dictionary.com definition. I had no idea it had a nautical definition as well. I guess that’s what you get for growing up on top of a mountian instead of by the water…
