Uncomfortable Weather in Papeete

Up until now we have pretty nice weather ashore. But now the weather has been yucky the last few days. There is a big storm to the south of us and we have been getting some of the wind and waves from the storm. The wind was 24 knots, coming from unusual directions, causing the boats
in the anchorage to shift a couple of times with the changing winds. Of course, each time the wind shifts, all the boaters worry about whether their boat will hit anything or anyone as all the boats resettle in into new spots. We know of one boat that dragged it’s anchor and crashed into another boat. Fortunately, there was no damage. They were lucky!

The waves were 12-18 feet high outside the reef, and, inside the normally calm lagoon, it was so rocky that we heard reports of sea sickness from people on boats within the lagoon even the ones in the marina! Eric put out one of the paravanes to help stop the rolling. Unfortunately, the boat on the other side of us was too close for us to put the fish (paravane) out on that side.

The rough water created a lot of weird sea scum. The sea scum got all over the sides of the boat as the rough water slapped against the boat. Hopefully it won’t be too bad to clean.

On Friday afternoon it began to pour and the heavy rains lasted all night. It rained so hard that Eric had to go outside to bail the dinghy out twice because it had filled up with so much rain water that it was in danger of sinking. It rained the other days, but not like on Friday.

Also, the temperature turned cool enough that you could wear a sweater and be comfortable.

Needless to say, going out wasn’t very much fun. On Saturday, Eric went to the store by himself. The ride from the dinghy dock to the boat was the scariest dinghy ride he had ever been on. The waves were huge, making the ride to and from Kosmos very rough and wet.

Since going out was difficult, Eric tried to get some projects done at the boat that we hadn’t gotten to before leaving. But in the heavy rocking it was difficult to get anything done. So, it has basically been four days of sitting and waiting for the weather to improve.
