Santa Rosalia — Day 4

Friday morning (August 19), the sky was ominously gray. The weather forecast said a storm was approaching. We could see that it was raining in the distance. But it was (relatively) cool! We decided to risk to the rain and walk to the grocery store, about a mile away. We went with another cruiser named Teal, who served as a tour guide.

We walked to the store along one route and back along another. On the way to the store, we walked along the waterfront into downtown, then took a staircase up the hill to a road.

The grocery store was on this road. Along the way, on the left-hand side of the street, we passed the local hospital and a few other buildings sitting atop old mining tunnels.

On the right was the old copper mill and pretty views of the harbor. Some of the old copper mill has been restored and the buildings were charming.

Other sections of the copper mill were dilapidated.

Beyond the mill, the buildings looked newer and the construction style was more typical for Mexico (ie, concrete walls with flat roofs or Spanish tile roofs).

On the way back, we followed a road back down the hill and followed Highway 1 along the water. From this perspective, we could see more clearly which parts of the mill have/have not been refurbished. Amongst the refurbished buildings, we noted a hardware store, a motel, and a small outlet store. These two photos are what we believe were once the ore refinery and may now be a museum. The car in the first photo belongs to the gardeners, who cheerfully greeted us.

Here is a photo taken from the edge of the harbor. It is hard to believe that in the not-too-distant past, this was a deep water port where big boats came in to pick up the copper.

There was a Malecon (a walkway along the waterfront) that Teal told us was newly constructed. The majority of buildings along the Malecon were in disrepair. We saw there was currently construction going on below the Malecon, along the water itself, and saw a sign indicating that they were building a marina for small boats.

After returning to the marina, Christi went on a cooking marathon. In the evening, Eric went to the pool with the cruisers. We are sad to report that it never did rain.
