Thursday, April 30 — As we’ve already reported, Kosmos was hauled out on Monday, April 13 to have assorted work done, mostly preventative maintenance. We’ll do a complete write up of the work done in a separate post. This is just a quick summary of how Christi, Eric and Keith spent their time while Kosmos was out of the water.
Eric spent the majority of the days onboard Kosmos. Each day, he looked at what was scheduled to be done and helped clear spaces for the workers, then put everything back away once they were done. He monitored the work that was being done and helped as much as was viable. As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, Eric was frustrated that he’d hurt his back and was unable to do as much boat work himself as he would have preferred. He began pursuing care. He visited a doctor and had tests run. Once he had an understanding of what the issue was, he began trying some strategies to help facilitate healing.
He tried a couple of new restaurants. One was a pizza place called DeSanos, which had real Italian thin crust pizzas, that he really liked. He also tried a breakfast restaurant called Sarah’s Cafe, located in the same shopping center as Doris and West Marine. Sarah’s was not bad, but he preferred Berries & More.
Christi and Keith flew to San Diego on April 16. Leaving Palm Beach.

Landing in San Diego

During the 10 full days that they were in San Diego, they primarily focused on getting caught up in science class. Lab experiments could be hard to do on the boat, especially in remote locations where it could be hard to acquire materials, so they’ve been skipping the lab experiments. In that short trip, they did an entire semester’s worth of labs. Here was Keith building a solar oven and cooking sausage in it.

They also took care of some life chores, such as going to their respective dentists. They did fun things, too! They went on a hike that they’d never been on before, called Annie’s Slot Canyon in San Elijo Lagoon. That was a beautiful walk and the slot part was fun. This was looking down from the top of the ladder in the slot.

And the view from the top.

They went to an escape room in Irvine called The Escape Game. As much as we’d liked Beat The Bomb, Christi and Keith both preferred The Escape Game. Christi felt like it was more satisfying sensory experience — it was aesthetically pleasing and they liked touching the assorted clues.

One day, they went to lunch at the hang glider port in La Jolla. It was a windy day and there were a lot of gliders were out. It was a really beautiful location no matter whether there was wind or not, but it was especially beautiful with all the gliders dotting the sky. And the food there was surprisingly good!
They also went to one of Keith’s favorite places, called The Plunge. It was two indoor public pools located in Belmont Park, which was in a part of town called Mission Bay. One of the pools had a giant obstacle course, and Keith loved that obstacle course.

We rarely go to the movies. However, one of Keith’s favorite books was Project Hail Mary, so we all went to see it the same day — Christi and Keith in San Diego and Eric in Palm Beach, so in a sense we all saw it together. Keith was disappointed that the movie wasn’t as good as good as the book.
Christi and Keith flew back to Palm Beach on April 28, which happened to be the 19 year anniversary of the start of Christi and Eric’s circumnavigation. It was hard to believe so much time has passed.
The last couple of days before being allowed to live onboard again, they helped Eric get things put away as the workers finished each section. They also helped get the boat ready for our upcoming passage.
