Family in Athens and Crete

Friday, May 15 On Tuesday morning we flew to Athens. We had gotten lucky and found plane tickets at literally half of what they normally cost. The recession must be really bad to get such cheap tickets during prime tourist season.

We landed in Athens on Wednesday in the late afternoon. Needless to say, it had been a long day of travel. The flights were uneventful. Traveling by plane always makes us appreciate how nice it is to travel by boat. Yes, sometimes travel by boat is miserable, too, but at least on the boat you aren’t cramped into small seats, can get some sleep, can eat or drink whenever you want, can watch a movie of your own choosing, don’t have to listen to screaming babies, don’t have to worry about lost luggage, and don’t have to smell people who have been traveling for 26 hours and need a shower (including ourselves).

Upon arrival in Athens, we went straight to our hotel in downtown, got dinner and crashed. We were up early yesterday morning so we could walk around a bit before meeting Andronikos. We picked a route that took us down streets we have never been on before so we could catch some new sights. We probably walked about 5 miles total and it was lovely. We talked about how much nicer the city has become over the years.

Athens is a fairly homogenous looking city, mostly 8 10 story blocky buildings dotted with Byzantine style churches. You can differentiate the newer churches from the very old ones by their placement. New churches fit the layout of the street. The old churches are in odd places, like hanging halfway out into the street, tucked between two other buildings, or an appendage off of another building. Here is an example of an old church in an odd place

The Homecoming and Adjusting

Saturday, May 2 — We were up early, which was painful given that we had gotten no sleep the night before last and had a long day yesterday. We got ready and put up the dress flags. Trevor, our crew member on the passage to Ensenada, and his girlfriend Katie arrived at 0845. The original plan had been for them to wait in the channel for us and to take photos of us coming in. Given that we had snuck in a day early, we were going to “recreate” the arrival this morning for the camera. Actually, I am glad that we will be photographed clean and fresh, instead of tired and grungy after a night time run, as was originally planned. We left the slip about 0900. Interestingly enough, on our way out of the slip, we spotted the 57 Nordhavn we had met in Panama. They saw us, too, and gave us a call on the radio to congratulate us.

We went back out to the edge of the bay and Trevor snapped photos all the way up to the dock on Coronado. Our welcoming party was small, just some family and close friends, which was good. We think we would have been overwhelmed by too many people. Here is a shot of Trevor and Katie taking pictures of us.

And then us with Kosmos at the dock on Coronado, and then Kosmos with downtown San Diego in the background.

And few of the people who came out to see us.

Monday, May 4 A few friends had gatherings to welcome us over the weekend. We saw quite a few people, some close friends, some casual acquaintances, over the weekend. Since the thing that we missed most was Continue reading

The San Diego to San Diego World Circumnavigation is Completed!

We got up at midnight after a two hour nap. Everything was pretty well ready to go before we took our nap, so all we needed to do was warm up the engine before we pulled out. We untied and took off at around 1230.

At first the seas were ugly. Eric was really sick and Christi was green. It is kind of surprising to us how fast we lose our tolerance to the ocean. The longer we sit in port, the more likely we are to be green when we do finally go out again.

The seas slowly but surely calmed down throughout the night, and by dawn it was pretty darn flat outside. It was foggy out. Not so foggy that there was no visibility, but foggy enough that we couldn’t see the mountainous Mexican coastline at all. And we were running pretty close to shore.

We got to the US border at around 0900. We were expecting Continue reading
